Pituicytoma Simulating Pituitary Macroadenoma

(Left) Pituicytomas are clinically nonfunctioning benign tumors that on neuroimaging studies completely simulate clinically silent pituitary macroadenomas.

(Left) Although on neuroimaging studies, pituicytomas simulate clinically silent pituitary macroadenomas, microscopically they often simulate meningiomas, as in this example with vague whorls.

(Right) TTF-1 nuclear immunoreactivity, which is strongly expressed in normal pituicytes, is also present in pituicytomas. Spindle cell oncocytomas and granular cell tumors are also positive, and these 3 tumors are thus thought to have a shared origin.
