作为中国人,我们都喜欢过星期五,因为过完星期五就意味着周末的到来。不过,对于一些外国人来说,他们并不喜欢星期五,就像一些中国人讨厌数字4一样。
As Chinese, we all like to celebrate Friday, because after Friday, it means the arrival of the weekend. However, for some foreigners, they don’t like Friday, just as some Chinese hate the number 4.

但并不是所有人都讨厌周五,不信仰基督教的人,也跟我们一样,很喜欢周五哟。其实,Friday一词在英语中很有历史和文化内涵。今天,普特君就带大家一起学习一些关于Friday的地道表达。
But not everyone hates Fridays, and people who don’t believe in Christianity love Fridays like us. In fact, the word Friday has a lot of historical and cultural connotations in English. Today, Puterjun will take you to learn some authentic expressions about Friday.

Black Friday

首先,先说一下为什么一些外国人不喜欢周五,这和Black Friday(黑色星期五)有关。Black Friday其实有两层含义。
First, let’s talk about why some foreigners don’t like Friday, which has to do with Black Friday. Black Friday actually has two meanings.

第一,“黑色星期五”是指感恩节 (11月第四个星期四)后的一天。这一天,黑压压的一片人会去商场排长队购物。之后就是美国传统而盛大的圣诞节,人们通常由此开始圣诞节大采购。
First, “Black Friday” refers to the day after Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November). On this day, a group of people will go to the mall to queue up for shopping. This is followed by the traditional and grand Christmas in the United States, where people usually start their Christmas purchases.

第二,有一种说法,黑色星期五源于西方的宗教信仰:耶稣的受难日(Good Friday)是在复活节前的星期五,那天恰好是13号,而13又是不吉利的数字,两者的结合令人相信当天会发生不幸的事情。
Second, there is a saying that Black Friday originated from Western religious beliefs: Good Friday is the Friday before Easter, which happens to be the 13th, and 13 is an unlucky number, and the combination of the two leads to the belief that something unfortunate will happen that day.

I hate working in retail on Black Friday—everyone acts like a crazy person!
I hate working in retail on Black Friday—everyone acts like a crazy person!
从事零售业的我不喜欢在黑色星期五工作,因为那天人们都跟疯了一样。
Being in retail, I don’t like working on Black Friday because people are like crazy that day.

Friday face

那么说到Friday face,可千万别按照字面把它理解成“星期五的脸”的意思。正因为Friday在外国人的眼中代表着坏运气,friday face就带有一些负面的意思,它是指“脸色很差,神情疲惫”。
So when it comes to Friday face, don’t literally understand it as “Friday face”. Because Friday represents bad luck in the eyes of foreigners, friday face has some negative meanings, it refers to “a very bad face and a tired expression“.

如果有人跟你说friday face,能证明你那天的脸色很差,需要注意下哦。
If someone tells you friday face, it can prove that your face is very bad that day, so you need to pay attention.

Jack, What’s wrong with you? I see that you had got your friday face on today.

杰克,你怎么了?我看你今天脸色很差啊!  Jack, what’s wrong with you? I see that your face is very bad today!

 girl Friday

前几天,普特君在刷剧的时候,碰到了“girl Friday”这个表达,困惑了好一阵。如果按字面意思“星期五女孩”理解,完全跟剧情对不上,最后查了一下,才发现这是英文中的一个实用且有趣的表达:指的是“女助手;女秘书
A few days ago, when Puterjun was watching the drama, he encountered the expression “girl Friday” and was confused for a while. If you understand it literally as “Friday girl”, it doesn’t match the plot at all, and finally looked it up and found that this is a practical and interesting expression in English: it refers to “female assistant; Female Secretary

I like to have my daughter be my girl Friday during “take your child to work” day. She’s a better worker than some of my employees!

在“带孩子一起工作”这一天,我喜欢让女儿当我的助手。她干活比我一些员工还要出色。
On the day of “working with children”, I like to have my daughter as my assistant. She does a better job than some of my employees.

man Friday

与girl Friday一样,man Friday这个短语其实来源于英文名著《鲁滨逊漂流记》,鲁滨逊在岛上从野人手里救下一个俘虏,给他起名“星期五”。此后,“星期五”便成了鲁滨逊忠实的仆人和朋友。

“Friday face”不是“星期五的脸”,真正的意思你一定想不到!“Friday face” is not “Friday face”, you must not have t
Like girl Friday, the phrase man Friday actually comes from the English book “Robinson Crusoe”, Robinson rescued a captive from a savage on the island and named him “Friday”. Since then, “Friday” has become Robinson’s loyal servant and friend.

后来,英文中就有了“A person Friday” 这一表达,多形容“在公司做杂活的人”,所以“man Friday”就表示“助手”。
Later, there was an expression “A person Friday” in English, which mostly describes “a person who does chores in the company”, so “man Friday” means “male assistant“.

I like to have Edison be my man Friday because he is so effective when doing his daily work.

我喜欢让爱迪生当我的男助手,因为他日常工作很有效率。
I like to have Edison as my male assistant because he is very efficient in his daily work.

thank God it’s Friday
“thank God it’s Friday”,也可以缩写称“TGIF”,这个短语十分有趣,它的意思正如字面所呈现的那样,即“谢天谢地,今天是星期五”。毕竟,星期五的到来意味着休息日即将到来。
“thank God it’s Friday”, also abbreviated as “TGIF”, is an interesting phrase that literally means “thank goodness it’s Friday“. After all, the arrival of Friday means that a day off is coming.

Good morning, everyone. Thank God it’s Friday, am I right?

各位早上好!谢天谢地,今天是星期五了,对吧?  Good morning, everyone! Thankfully, it’s Friday, right?

What an awful week this has been. All I can say at this point is thank God it’s Friday.

这一周过的简直太糟糕了。我现在能说的是,谢天谢地,今天周五了。
The week has been terrible. All I can say now is, thank goodness, it’s Friday.

Thank God it’s Friday and I’ll be home enjoying a two-day holiday after today’s work.

谢天谢地,今天是星期五。待今日工作结束,我就可以享受两天的假期了。
Thank goodness, it’s Friday. When today’s work is over, I can enjoy two days off.

When two Fridays come together

从字面上看,这个短语可以翻译成“当两个星期五撞到一块儿”,意思就是过两个周五然后放4天假?想多了,当然这只存在于幻想之中….所以,该短语就是“不可能发生”的意思。
Literally, this phrase can be translated as “when two Fridays hit together”, which means two Fridays and then 4 days off? I think too much, of course, this only exists in fantasy….So, the phrase means “impossible“.

A: “When are you going to help me clean out the garage?”
A: “你什么时间帮我清理下垃圾?”  A: “When do you help me clean up the trash?”
B: “How about when two Fridays come together?”
B: “这不可能发生。”  B: “This can’t happen.”

It’ll be a frosty Friday (in July)
看字面,有些同学可能会把这个短语理解为“星期五有霜冻”,其实不是的。It’ll be a frosty Fridy,它的正确含义是“(在某个时间之前)不可能发生”。该短语后常跟in July,可以这样理解:7月的某个星期五会有霜冻?这不可能。
Literally, some students may understand this phrase as “there is frost on Friday”, but it is not. It’ll be a frosty Fridy, which correctly means “it can’t have happened (until a certain time)“. The phrase is often followed by in July, which can be understood as follows: There will be frost on a Friday in July? That’s impossible.

It will be a frosty Friday in July when our team wins the championship. We’re terrible.

我们的团队赢得冠军是不可能的,我们非常糟糕。  It was impossible for our team to win the championship, we were very bad.

That Monday morning feeling

今天应个景,给大家介绍一个关于“星期一”的短语——That Monday morning feeling。相对大家对这种感觉并不陌生….因为“周一早上的心情”大家都懂。没错,“That Monday morning feeling”就是我们常说的“让人不开心的星期一综合症”,用一句话来形容,就是上班的心情犹如上坟。。
Today, I would like to introduce you to a phrase about “Monday” – That Monday morning feeling. Relatively everyone is not unfamiliar with this feeling…. Because everyone understands the “Monday morning mood”. That’s right, “That Monday morning feeling” is what we often call “unhappy Monday syndrome”, which is described in one sentence as the mood of going to work is like going to a grave.

From the exhausted faces of my classmates can I see that they have got that Monday morning feeling.

从同学疲惫的脸上,我能看出来他们都得了星期一综合症。
From the tired faces of my classmates, I could tell that they all had Monday syndrome.
