fair 一词源自古英语 'feor'，指的是“干净清爽，没有瑕疵”。
起初，最多搭配的是天气或天象，如雪莱的诗句：
Fairer far than this fair Day （远比这晴好白昼更明媚）

impartial 是立场上机械般的绝对公平，不偏不倚，一碗水端平的“公平”；
equitable 强调满足需求，照顾个体差异的“公平”，如多劳多得，少劳不得

如果搭配了一个场所，则是指的“公平”交易的地方，即“集市”“展览会、博览会”。注意区分 market 一般是指日常的市场，fair 一般是一年一两次，持续好一段时间的。正如歌里唱的 Scarboroug Fair，位于英格兰北约克郡的滨海小镇，1253 年起设立了一年一度的大型集市，从 8 月 15 日持续到 9 月 29 日，长达 45 天。
此外，fair 还可以表达没有明显的瑕疵，可接受、中规中矩、没多好，即程度上“一定地”，“相当地”的意思。常用成是副词 fairly 的形式。

fairly 一般是出于礼貌上“相当”good，因为只是“一定程度地”
pretty 是真心主观上觉得“非常”，比普通的要好

so 是夸张的情绪的“非常”，更多是主观情感上的
quite 是容易可比较的“非常”
