很久很久以前，在一个遥远的国家里，有一位非常喜欢漂亮衣服的皇帝。
A long, long time ago, in a faraway country, there was an emperor who loved beautiful clothes more than anything else.
他每天都要换好几套衣服，而且总是追求最华丽、最独特的款式。
He changed his clothes several times a day and always sought the most splendid and unique styles.
他的宫殿里堆满了各种丝绸、天鹅绒和金线织成的服装，但他总觉得还不够。
His palace was filled with clothes made of silk, velvet, and gold thread, but he always felt it was not enough.
有一天，两个自称是世界上最优秀的裁缝的人来到了这个国家。
One day, two men who claimed to be the finest tailors in the world arrived in the country.
他们声称自己能织出一种神奇的布料，这种布料不仅轻薄透明，而且只有聪明的人才能看见。
They claimed they could weave a magical fabric that was not only light and transparent but also invisible to anyone who was foolish or incompetent.
如果谁看不见，就说明他既愚蠢又不称职。
If someone couldn’t see it, it meant they were either stupid or incompetent.
皇帝听了之后，觉得这种布料非常神奇，于是决定让这两个裁缝为他制作一套新衣服。
The emperor, intrigued by this magical fabric, decided to have these tailors make him a new set of clothes.
他想：如果我能穿上这样的衣服，我就能证明自己是多么聪明和称职的皇帝。
He thought: If I can wear such clothes, I can prove how wise and capable I am.
裁缝们开始工作了。
The tailors began their work.
他们在房间里摆满了织布机，假装在织布。
They set up looms in their room and pretended to weave.
其实，他们什么都没有织，只是不停地比划着，假装很忙碌的样子。
In reality, they were weaving nothing at all, just pretending to be busy.
他们告诉皇帝，这种布料是如此轻薄，以至于它几乎是看不见的。
They told the emperor that the fabric was so fine and delicate that it was almost invisible.
他们还说，只有聪明的人才能看见它。
They also said that only wise people could see it.
皇帝派了一位最聪明的大臣去查看裁缝的工作进度。
The emperor sent his wisest minister to check on the tailors’ progress.
大臣走进裁缝的房间，看到他们假装在织布的样子，但他什么也没看到。
The minister entered the room and saw the tailors pretending to weave, but he saw nothing at all.
他心里想：“难道我是愚蠢的吗？我可不能让别人知道我看不见这神奇的布料。”
He thought to himself: ‘Am I the foolish one? I can’t let anyone know that I can’t see this magical fabric.’
于是，他回去告诉皇帝：“那布料真是太美了！色彩鲜艳，图案精美，真是无与伦比！”
So, he went back and told the emperor: ‘The fabric is truly magnificent! The colors are vibrant, and the patterns are exquisite. It’s unparalleled!’
皇帝听了很高兴，但还是有点不放心。
The emperor was pleased to hear this, but he still had some doubts.
他又派了另一位官员去查看。
He sent another official to check.
这位官员也什么都没看到，但他也不想承认自己看不见，于是他也回去说：“那布料真是太棒了！”
This official also saw nothing, but he didn’t want to admit it, so he went back and said: ‘The fabric is truly wonderful!’
最后，皇帝决定亲自去看。
Finally, the emperor decided to see for himself.
他带着一群大臣走进裁缝的房间。
He entered the room with a group of ministers.
裁缝们继续假装在织布，皇帝也什么都没看到。
The tailors continued to pretend to weave, and the emperor saw nothing.
但他不想承认自己看不见，于是他说：“这布料真是太神奇了！我看到了，我看到了！”
But he didn’t want to admit that he couldn’t see it, so he said: ‘The fabric is truly magical! I see it, I see it!’
所有的大臣们也都跟着说：“是啊，真是太美了！”
All the ministers followed suit and said: ‘Yes, it’s truly beautiful!’
裁缝们开始为皇帝“裁剪”衣服，其实只是在空气中比划。
The tailors began to ‘tailor’ the emperor’s clothes, just making gestures in the air.
他们假装把衣服穿在皇帝身上，还说：“陛下，您的新衣服真是太合身了！”
They pretended to dress the emperor and said: ‘Your Majesty, the new clothes fit you perfectly!’
皇帝在镜子前转了一圈，虽然他什么也没看到，但他还是装出一副满意的样子。
The emperor turned around in front of the mirror. Although he saw nothing, he still pretended to be satisfied.
然后，他决定穿着这套“新衣服”去参加游行，让所有人都看看他的新衣服。
Then, he decided to wear the ‘new clothes’ to the parade, so everyone could see his new clothes.
游行开始了，皇帝走在大街上，他什么也没穿，但所有人都在夸赞他的衣服多么漂亮。
The parade began. The emperor walked down the street, wearing nothing, but everyone praised his clothes as beautiful.
直到一个小孩子大声说：“皇帝什么也没穿啊！”
Until a little child shouted: ‘The emperor isn’t wearing anything at all!’
这句话很快传开了，人们开始意识到，原来皇帝真的是什么也没穿。
This remark quickly spread, and people began to realize that the emperor was indeed wearing nothing.
最后，皇帝也意识到自己被愚弄了，但他已经无地自容，只能继续走完游行的路线。
Finally, the emperor realized he had been fooled, but he was too embarrassed to admit it and had to continue the parade.
从此以后，他再也不敢轻易相信别人的话了。
From then on, he never dared to believe others so easily again.
