The automated cylinder oil mixing (ACOM) system is a newly developed cylinder oil delivery system which automatically mixes two finished oils to the optimum base number (BN) depending on the sulphur content of the fuel in use, see Fig. 1.

The ACOM system will facilitate the lowest possible cylinder oil feed rate and thereby reduce costs, and still ensure safe lubrication and optimised tribology of the piston rings and liners.

The benefit of the ACOM system lies in its ability to ensure that the cylinder oil is mixed to match the sulpur content of the fuel in use, i.e. from 0.1% to 3.5%. The limits for when the ACOM is active depend on the adaptive cylinder oil control factor (ACC factor) for the engine, see SL2014-587/JAP. The ACC factor is also known as the feed rate factor.

The ACOM system also measures the cylinder oil consumption in real time, and it is fitted with the features to read out the daily onsumption and to download a file containing the data. Savings are achieved because the traditional cylinder oil day/measuring tanks can be omitted and the workload of the crew can thereby be reduced.
The ACOM solution may also be an interesting business case when using high sulfur fuels, based on operational parameters, sulfur content in the fuel, and the lubricating oil used. Figure 3 shows the condition of the 6G80ME-C9.2 engine, where ACOM mixed with 25 BN and 140 BN oil was compared to using 25 BN oil and 100 BN oil respectively. In this example, by using ACOM, the ship can save $22000 annually.
