After the beginning of autumn, Haotou Village in the Torch Development Zone has distant mountains and blue skies. This village, located in the eastern suburbs of Zhongshan City, backed by Wumafeng Mountain, was founded almost the same age as Xiangshan County, is a large village with a long local history, and is the place where the villagers are scattered all over the world. In the afternoon, walking on the quiet and peaceful village road under the warm sun, the golden sun shines on the ancient buildings, silently regaining its brilliance, and silently telling the wind and rain of the century-old overseas Chinese buildings. “The impact of overseas Chinese capital and overseas Chinese strength on their hometown is like air, everywhere.” This is the consensus of the Haotou people.

In the Haotou Township Federation of Overseas Chinese, there is a black and white photo taken in 1924 on the wall, with the words “Commemoration of the Orientation of Returned Overseas Chinese in Haotou Township, Xiangshan Township”. These old friends who took a group photo at the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall, some wore robes and horse coats, and more wore suits and suits, “These people were all well-known squires and overseas Chinese in the village at that time, and usually after overseas Chinese came back, they would go to the ancestral hall to take a look and take photos with relatives and gentry.” Zheng Zhijun, a member of the Haotou Township Federation of Overseas Chinese, said.

According to records, there were 18 Zheng ancestral halls in the history of Haotou Village, but after years of wind and rain, many ancestral halls have either been converted into private houses, schools, agricultural material warehouses, etc., or collapsed due to disrepair, and the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall (also known as Shang Lun and Shang Zheng Second Ancestral Ancestral Hall) is the largest existing ancestral hall in Haotou Village. With the reform and opening up and the rise of the global Chinese root-seeking boom, many overseas Chinese have returned to their hometowns to renovate and restore old ancestral halls, contact the old people, and continue to revise the genealogy, constantly arousing the spiritual feelings of patriotism and love for the country and hometown of clan relatives at home and abroad.

Walking into Haotou Village, passing through rows of scattered village houses, walking along the laneway for several miles, suddenly open, a granite archway about 9 meters high and 11 meters wide comes into view. This archway, built in 1637 AD, stands on the central axis of the altar in front of the ancestral hall, and the archway is engraved with dragon and phoenix patterns of drum stones and auspicious clouds, and the banners on the front and back are “Pujiang Shize” and “Zhao Dynasty Praise”, which expresses the original residence of the Zheng clan, and encourages future generations to strive upwards, strive for progress, and never stop. It is the earliest archway building in Zhongshan, and after nearly 400 years of wind and rain, it still stands in front of the ancestral hall like a giant, adding a touch of dignity and solemnity to the ancestral hall.

Passing through the archway, you can see that the couplet of the ancestral hall is inscribed “Xingyang Sect is far away, Zhejiang Water Branch Chief”. Stepping into the ancestral hall, there are “Famous People” in Haotou Village on both sides of the walls at the entrance, and there are picture introductions of the eight scenic spots of Haotou such as “Shanzhai Walking Moon”, “Qingyun Evening View” and “Wenge Tide Watching”. The Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall is located in Haotou Village, sitting from northwest to southeast, founded in the fourth year of the Ming Dynasty (1624 AD), nearly 400 years old, covering an area of 2,865 square meters (4.3 acres), for three into five rooms layout, decorated with the corner of the big gold star, quite a combination of the Central Plains Han and Jin dynasties and the ancient Yue Cantonese culture.

Since the 40s of the 20th century, the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall has been used as a venue such as Haotou Township Office and school. In 1955, the front seat was demolished due to school expansion, and in 1980, the middle seat was demolished again due to a dilapidated house, and the only one that has survived to this day is the rear seat. The back seat is now called “Chongshan Hall”, and after repairing the old as the old, it retains the basic original appearance such as the original yellow glazed tiles, green brick exterior walls and mixed wooden structure of the bucket and lifting beams, and each brick and tile carries the respect and nostalgia of the ancestors of the descendants of the Zheng family.

In 2005, the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall was officially returned to the descendants of the Zheng family. In accordance with the principle of “not changing the original state of cultural relics” and the requirements of “four preservations”, the Zheng family first renovated and repaired the back seat, erected a fence, laid antique step bricks on the ground, laid granite slabs on the patio, renovated the third tile surface and archway, and also installed new lattice wooden doors, shrines, toilets and sewers. A hundred years of inheritance, the same root all over the world. With the joint efforts of clan relatives at home and abroad, this nearly 400-year-old ancestral hall was renovated in 2014, restoring its original scale and re-assuming the role of a spiritual place for honoring ancestors and harmonizing the clan.

“On the National Day in 2016, the cultural compound of our ancestral hall was inaugurated, and many overseas Chinese came back, and the ancestral hall was a must-see. At the same time, I also look at the changes in the village, look for traces of the past, and enjoy the Haotou wooden dragon dance. Zheng Zhijun said that now the ancestral hall is also used as a cultural venue for villagers to carry out cultural and recreational activities such as reading and learning guqin.

There are many overseas Chinese in Haotou Village, and as early as the 19th century, some people in the village emigrated overseas. Today, there are more than 3,000 overseas Chinese living overseas in Haotou Village, and the Zheng family’s footprints are all over the world. Although they live in a foreign country, they always care about their homeland and help each other in the construction of their hometown and public welfare undertakings, benefiting Sangzi.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty (1873 AD), Zheng Siquan, who was only 15 years old, took a small wooden sailboat from Xiangshan to Hong Kong, and then transferred to a galleon to Sydney, Australia. In the early days of Australia, he herded sheep for local herders, and later reclaimed wasteland to grow vegetables and sugarcane. After saving a certain amount of savings, he abandoned farming and business, opened a small shop, and ran a 200-acre sugarcane plantation, becoming a wealthier overseas Chinese. Zheng Siquan, who was concerned about his hometown, returned to his hometown in 1922 with more than ten family members, built a Chinese and Western building in Haotou and named it “Rongye Hall”, which is also the “ghost building” in the mouth of Haotou villagers. In 1924, Zheng Siquan initiated the fundraising to build the Haotou Revitalization Society, which was used as a place for overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan villagers to gather and discuss how to revitalize Haotou’s economy and welfare undertakings. The ancient building of the Revitalization Society has gone through vicissitudes and embodies the feelings of the older generation of overseas Chinese who love their hometown, and is now listed as a key protected cultural relic in Zhongshan City.

In addition, Zheng Siquan also joined forces with returned overseas Chinese and overseas Chinese families in the township to jointly open the Xiehe Xing Rice Machine Factory, Electric Light Machine Factory, and Weaving Factory in Haotou Second Village, built a barn and taught the villagers to weave, improving the lives of the villagers, “This barn was the largest granary in Zhongshan at that time.” Zheng Zhijun said. In addition to building the factory, Zheng Siquan also proposed and raised funds to build the Qihuan Highway, which starts from Shiqi Academy through Dabai Mountain, Xibai Mountain, Tugualing, Niuqiwan, Haotou, Baimiao, Langwei, Shangxiang, Yaoyao, Zhangjiabian, Jiangweitou to Dahuan, and the goods of the town can be directly transported to Haotou and other villages by car, which not only facilitates the villagers along the line, but also revitalizes the regional economy along the line and promotes the development of industrial and agricultural production.

“Many facilities in Haotou were donated and built by overseas Chinese, such as village committee office buildings, nurseries, kindergartens, community health service stations, etc., many of which are still in use today.” Zheng Zhijun said. Among them, overseas Chinese Zheng Huagui attaches special importance to education and generosity and public welfare. After the restoration of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, he returned to China with his family for sightseeing and visiting relatives and friends. According to incomplete statistics, from 1986 to 1999, Haotou Primary School built teaching buildings, botanical gardens, decorated overseas Chinese federations, etc., and donated a total of 145,230 yuan; The Torch Development Zone government built the “Dongzhen Overseas Chinese Home” that year, and he was willing to help 500,000 yen; In 1995, he supported the Hope Project in some areas of Sichuan Province, donating to build a two-story “Junchang” school with more than 10 classrooms in poor areas of the province, and donated a large number of chairs. “The older generation who know Zheng Huagui and have dealt with him all say that he is upright, bold, affectionate, and credible!” Zheng Zhijun said.

Turning from Yongkou Main Street to Haotou Street, 100 meters forward suddenly opened up, and the wide and bright Haotou Cultural Square came into view. On the northeast side of Haotou Cultural Square stands, and a building surrounded by a high wall is the former site of Haotou School. The former site of Haotou School was built in 1933 as a primary school and is now a kindergarten, but it is still upright after nearly a hundred years of wind and frost. The main building is a two-story building, adopting a typical Chinese and Western design style, the façade color is blue and pink, the plan is rectangular, and the brick concrete structure is complete. The main entrance is opened in the middle of the southwest side, with an external convex colonnade in front, steps in front of the corridor, and railings on both sides. The porch is supported by four side pillars, the second floor is equipped with a balcony, each side has side pillars to support the roof, the front of the roof is built with a parapet, and the word “Haotou School” in black on a white background is sculpted in the middle, which is dotted with a star, although it is a little mottled, but still eye-catching.

Stepping into the building along the steps is refreshing and comfortable. There is a hall in the middle of the front of the building, and a longitudinal patio in the middle of the back, and the stone slabs are paved. There are many classrooms on both sides, such as “Nanxi Ancestral Classroom” and “Matsuoka Ancestral Classroom”, and there is a corridor in the air on the second floor that connects them. Walking out of the side door, facing a three-story teaching building, many classrooms have donor monuments hanging on the lintels, such as “Zheng Huagui Classroom”, “Zheng Rujun Classroom”, “Honolulu Overseas Chinese Classroom” and “Hong Kong and Macao Folks Classroom”.

“These are the individual or collective names of the donors.” Zheng Zhijun said that the three-story teaching building was newly built in 1987 with funds raised by the village committee, of which Zheng Luansheng, Zheng Huagui and other overseas villagers donated nearly one-third of the funds. In 1999, the Torch Development Zone integrated educational resources, Haotou Primary School was merged into the No. 3 Primary School of the Development Zone, and the school building was rented out to run Haotou Kindergarten. After the villagers in Haotou learned about it, they raised funds to fund the school: the Hong Kong Haotou Folks Association donated funds to buy tables and chairs for the kindergarten class; Hong Kong’s Cheng Hancheng donated $50,000 to assist the Haotou Village Committee in building a swimming pool and donating a piano for the kindergarten; The Canadian Overseas Chinese Institute, Zheng Zongli and Hong Kong Zheng Luansheng donated to the school to purchase teaching aids for the kindergarten…… “The former Haotou Primary School has a new look and was rated as a municipal kindergarten that year. Zheng Zhijun said.

As early as the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the people of Haotou understood the importance of education in changing their lives and revitalizing China, and vigorously donated funds to build schools. Under the relay inheritance of generations of Haotou people, Haotou School has cultivated a large number of talents around the world and in all walks of life. “What is activation and utilization, this is the best activation and utilization.” When walking to the playground of Haotou Kindergarten, Zhang Guoxiong, director of the Academic Committee of Guangdong Wuyi University and professor of the Guangdong Institute of Overseas Chinese Culture, looked at this campus that still plays an educational function. Ten years of trees, a hundred years of people. Zhang Guoxiong said that in the past, there were many overseas Chinese villages to build new school buildings and set up education, but time has passed, and with the decline in the number of rural children, many rural overseas Chinese schools have either been abandoned or repurposed, and there is no longer the laughter of children. ”

“My father goes to elementary school here, I go to kindergarten here, and some children in the village have graduated here, and every time I pass by, I think of the happy times here, which feels quite wonderful.” Zheng Genwei, who was born in 1997, said that chess is one of the characteristics of Haotou Kindergarten, and the young chess players in the park have won a number of national, provincial and municipal honors. He himself began to get into chess in the middle class of kindergarten, which largely exercised his thinking logical ability. Until now, Haotou Kindergarten also offers chess teaching, which has become the common memory of generations of Haotou children.

Expert comments
The “overseas Chinese” article has a lot to offer

“From a heritage point of view, Haotou Village has many typical overseas Chinese buildings, such as Rongye Hall, Revitalization Society and Diaolou, etc., which are rich and diverse, but they are scattered and do not form communities.” Zhang Guoxiong said that from the appearance point of view, the cultural connotation of overseas Chinese in Haotou Village can rarely be understood, and more is only a shell, “but this just shows that this village has a lot of architectural heritage worth protecting, and there is a lot to be done in the article about ‘overseas Chinese’.” ”

In the overseas Chinese township in Guangdong, the phenomenon of idle overseas Chinese buildings is widespread, but the situation in Haotou Village is very special, “the spiritual maintenance function of the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall, the teaching and education function of Haotou School are still playing.” Zhang Guoxiong said. After visiting and researching, Zhang Guoxiong was quite touched. He believes that there are many celebrities in Haotou Village, such as Zheng Zaoru, China’s first ambassador to Peru, Zheng Siquan, who led the establishment of the Haotou Overseas Chinese Revitalization Society, and Zheng Bi’an, who revolutionized with Sun Yat-sen…… They have all had a certain impact on the development of Chinese history, and this kind of celebrity cultural resources are quite rare, but Haotou Village rarely retains their former residences, and what remains is only a building, which needs to be rescued and protected urgently, “This shows that cultural resources are rich, but the protection and utilization urgently need to be strengthened.” Zhang Guoxiong said.

How to rescue and protect the existing and representative cultural resources and the architectural heritage of celebrity former residences is a major dilemma facing Haotou Village at present. In this regard, Zhang Guoxiong suggested that the protection of existing overseas Chinese buildings should be taken as a top priority as soon as possible. Most of the overseas Chinese buildings in Haotou Village are of the same type, and Zhang Guoxiong believes that the same type of buildings can be integrated and utilized, beaded into a chain, “so that there is retention, activation, and utilization.” “The protection of the former residences of celebrities is not only at the level of architectural protection, but also to dig deep into its profound historical and cultural connotations, systematically carry out structural protection, so that the floating culture and empty buildings can be combined, so that the culture has a material carrier and the building has a spiritual connotation.

“The Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall is a better representative.” Zhang Guoxiong said that under the transformation and utilization of the people of Haotou Village, the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall has not only restored the function of the traditional ancestral hall, but also become a “cultural compound” for the local people, which is worth promoting and learning from. He said that the Zheng family in Zhongshan migrated from Henan, Zhejiang and other places, but they were famous in Haotou and even Zhongshan and at home and abroad, and had a lot of influence, relying on cultural construction. For example, the wall engraved with family style and family motto in the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall is a sign that the “roots” of the Zheng family are deeply rooted here, even if they go far away, it has become a place for the souls of the descendants of the Zheng family, “It is precisely because the cultural construction of the Zheng family has been solidly done that this family has many talents.” The same is true for today’s development. ”
