Dragon Boat Festival (Random Thoughts)

By Anna Keiko

In the rotating wheel of time that flows onward,

There are always those of outstanding talent and wisdom dancing in their prime,

Who, due to envy, hatred, or conflicting stances,

Are mercilessly crushed, framed, and buried in the sands of the mundane world.

From then on, their fates are overturned, yet fortunately, their poems and writings remain,

Becoming their immortal imprints.

Qu Yuan was such a one, so was Su Dongpo,

Lu You and Sima Qian also met this tragic fate,

Li Si, Yue Fei, and countless others shared this destiny.

Sima Qian once said of Qu Yuan’s life,

That his integrity was doubted, his loyalty slandered,

That Ling Yin Zilan’s infamy, like ancient copper rust, remains to this day,

And Qin Hui’s hideousness, a stain that will never fade away.

Now, on the occasion of the Dragon Boat Festival, I am invited to compose a poem,

Before the pen touches paper, my mind has already wandered to the land of Chu.

“The road ahead is long and arduous, yet I shall search high and low,”

Qu Yuan’s spirit, alas, could not awaken the mist-shrouded, faint-hearted King Xiang of Chu,

Instead, he was exiled to Hanbei to tend sheep, his life in rags.

Within the palace walls, swallows chirped and orioles sang,

A scene of chaos and ignorance, so bland.

To remain as clear as a mirror, in such a milieu, was to invite disaster’s hand,

The crafty and treacherous, with their silver tongues, held sway,

While men of great learning were treated like garbage and burned away,

Ultimately becoming a feast for the fish and shrimp of the Miluo River’s bay.

Dragon boat races and fragrant zongzi, how can they bring justice back to Qu Yuan?

I take Qu Yuan as my spiritual totem,

Wandering the paths of poetry, where my thoughts are set free.

Yet, in the realm of verse, there are still those who harbor malice,

Like King Xiang of Chu, Zilan, Qin Hui, and their ilk, who continue to sow chaos.

But I firmly believe,

Where sunlight fails to penetrate, a mirror shall cast its bright gleam,

Where the mirror’s gaze cannot reach, conscience shall stand guard and redeem,

If even conscience falters in the gloom,

Then that is the true decay of the world, a doom.

Let poetry then be the final hammer of judgment,

To strike down the evil, and let truth be ascendant.
