继续分享毛姆的自传体小说《Of Human Bondage》(人性的枷锁)啦,我说过这是我读过的100一本书中感触最深的一本书🤔
这篇文章想分享的内容是书中关于主人公Philip一直走在寻找自我的路。
他通过挣脱多重精神枷锁,最终实现自我和解与生命顿悟。
Philip父母双亡后,被伦敦的伯父抚养。天生跛足的他在学校期间饱受校园欺凌,同学模仿他走路的样子,甚至辱骂为“瘸腿的笨蛋”。
总之他的学校生活过得并不快乐,并给他留下了深深的阴影。
多少个夜里,Philip跪地祷告自己的跛足被治愈,屡遭失望,从而产生了信仰上的怀疑,后来抛弃宗教枷锁。
离开学校后,Philip想去德国学习德语,他认为:
‘it’ll be useful to know foreign languages. I shall get far more out of a year in Germany than by staying on at that hole.’
学外语肯定有用,去德国待一年,收获应该比耗在这地方大得多。所以他进入了一家会计事务所,后来因为厌倦数字的枯燥而辞职。
他发现自己有绘画的天赋,再加上朋友的鼓励和支持,于是决定去巴黎学画画。
Philip决定去法国学画画,最大的阻力之一来自伯父,所以当朋友建议他去学画画的时候,Philip说的是:
‘Can’t you see Uncle William’s face if I suddenly told him I wanted to go to Paris and study art?’
朋友当时说了一句’You’re your own master, aren’t you?’意思是说,你是你自己的主人,不是吗?我想是的。
当Philip决定去巴黎画画的时候,伯父尝试阻止他。Philip说的是’You can’t prevent me from going to Paris if I make up my mind to.’
是啊,一个人决定的事情,他人的阻止大都是无用的。
即便Philip被威胁拒绝支付其费用(All I can do is to refuse your money unless you do what I think fit),Philil也坚持自己的梦想。
他说:’I don’t care, I’ve made up my mind to go to Paris. I shall sell my clothes, and my books, and my father’s jewellery.’

意思是说:“我不管了,我已经决定去巴黎。我要卖掉衣服、书籍,还有父亲的珠宝。”这就是Philip追求艺术的决心。
Philip在巴黎画画的过程中,见识了一些画家贫穷潦倒的生活,也见识了一些本身没有绘画天赋却一直不放弃画画的画家。
有些人都头来什么也没得到,有些人甚至穷苦到饥饿致死,比如Fanny Price。
Philip认为’No one could have worked harder than she, nor with more sincerity; she believed in herself with all her heart; but it was plain that self-confidence meant very little, all his friends had it’
“她比谁都努力,也比谁都真诚;她全心全意相信自己,但显然自信毫无意义—毕竟他所有朋友都是如此自信。”
Fanny Price的结局带给Philip很大的震撼,他开始思考自己是否适合把未来放在艺术上。于是他开始了深度思考:
‘The history of painting was full of artists who had earned nothing at all. He must resign himself to penury; and it was worth while if he produced work which was immortal;
but he had a terrible fear that he would never be more than second-rate. Was it worth while for that to give up one’s youth, and the gaiety of life, and manifold chances of being?’

“绘画史上不乏穷困潦倒的艺术家。他必须甘守清贫;若他能创作千古佳作倒也值得;可悲的是,他唯恐自己终将沦为二流。为这般前途放弃青春、人生欢愉与世间百态,真的值得吗?”
从这段思考上,我们也可以看出在月亮与六便士之间,如果自己够不到月亮,只能远远遥望,Philip更加倾向于去选择六便士。
所以接下来Philip就开始审视自己的绘画天赋以及绘画水平,是否可以让他够到月亮,是否有机会成为一流的、真正杰出的画家。
‘Philip looked at his own work. How could you tell whether there was anything in it or whether you were wasting your time?
It was clear that the will to achieve could not help you and confidence in yourself meant nothing.If I thought I wasn’t going to be really good, I’d rather give up painting.I don’t see any use in being a second-rate painter.’
“菲利普审视着自己的作品。人如何能分辨其中真有价值,或只是在虚度光阴呢?
显然,追求成功的信念、意志毫无用处,自信也毫无意义。若不能真正杰出,我宁可放弃画画,当个二流画家有什么意思呢。”
Philip把自己的想法告诉好朋友Cronshaw,他说:
‘I don’t believe I shall ever do much good as a painter.I don’t see any use in being second-rate. I’m thinking of chucking it!’
意思是说:“我不信自己能成什么好画家。当个二流画家有什么意思?我正琢磨不干了!”
Cronshaw接着反问:’Why shouldn’t you?’为什么不呢?
Philip的回答是:’I suppose I like the life.’大概是因为,我贪恋这份生活吧。

他贪恋艺术生涯,喜欢画画的生活,即便知道自己天赋平庸,也许不会有大的成就,甚至可能什么都得不到,依然做不到果断放弃,依然抱着一份不真实的希望,执着地坚持。
这也是当时Fanny Price固执地坚持,即便老师告诉她,她的创作一无是处,依然在坚持,依然抱有希望,最终因为追求心中的艺术而饥饿而死。

Philip不想最后落得个这样的结局。于是他去找了批评Fanny Price创作的老师Monsieur Foinet,希望得到答案。
Philip说:’I’m very poor. If I have no talent I would sooner do something else.’我很穷。若是没天赋,不如趁早改行。
老师问:’Don’t you know if you have talent?’你难道不知道自己是否有天赋吗?
Philip回答道:’All my friends know they have talent, but I am aware some of them are mistaken.’

“我所有的朋友都自认才华横溢,可我知道其中有些人分明在自欺欺人。”
果真真实!当我看到这段对话的时候,我真的忍不住点头赞同。
每个人都认为自己是优秀的,自己的创作是好的,这大概是人性的滤镜吧?只是有时候滤镜太厚的话,就做不到客观判断了。
我想这也是Philip去寻求老师建议的原因。Monsieur Foinet看过Philip的作品后,告诉他:
‘I see no talent in anything you have shown me. I see industry and intelligence. You will never be anything but mediocre.
But if you were to ask me my advice, I should say: take your courage in both hands and try your luck at something else.’

意思是说:
“从你所有作品中,我看不出半点天赋。唯有勤勉与聪慧。终其一生,你也只能是个普通画家。但你若问我的建议,我会说:拿出你的全部勇气,在其他事情上试试运气。”
正是这段话让Philip彻底放弃在艺术上创作出巨作的幻想,他放弃了艺术,回到了伦敦,开始走上学医之路。
在一次跟好朋友Hayward聊天时,Hayward问他:’Aren’t you rather sorry you chucked painting?’ 你后悔放弃画画吗?
Philip的回答是“No”,Hayward接着说:’I suppose you like doctoring?’我猜你喜欢行医,Philip的回答是:
‘No, I hate it; but there was nothing else to do. The drudgery of the first two years is awful, and unfortunately ! haven’t got the scientific temperament.’
“不喜欢,相反,厌恶至极,但除此之外别无选择。前两年的枯燥工作糟透了,可惜我不具备科学素养。”
即便如此,Philip经过七年的努力,终于成为了医生,还是一位颇受喜欢和尊重的医生。
后来医生Doctor South看重Philip并建议他作为合伙人来自己诊所,并且承诺以后将诊所归Philip,他拒绝了,理由是:
‘It means giving up everything I’ve aimed at for years. In one way and another I’ve had a roughish time, but I always had that one hope before me, to get qualified so that I might travel;
and now, when I wake in the morning, my bones simply ache to get off, I don’t mind where particularly, but just away, to places I’ve never been to.’
“这意味着放弃我多年来追求的一切。我这一路走来,多多少少吃了些苦头,但我心里始终怀着一个希望,就是拿到资格,这样我就能去旅行了;
而现在,每当我清晨醒来,我的骨头疼得只想离开,去哪里倒不太重要,只要是离开,去那些我从未到过的地方。”
他说这个目标现在已经近在咫尺了,他完成医院的任职后,接下来会去西班牙旅行,还会搭上一艘船去东方。
他说:
‘Life was before him and time of no account. He could wander, for years if he chose, in unfrequented places, amid strange peoples, where life was led in strange ways.
He did not know what he sought or what his journeys would bring him; but he had a feeling that he would learn something new about life and gain some clue to the mystery that he had solved only to find more mysterious.
And even if he found nothing he would allay the unrest which gnawed at his heart.’

“生活就在他面前展开,时光无关紧要。如果他愿意,他可以漫游多年,在那些人迹罕至的地方,在陌生的民族中间,体验那些奇特的生活方式。
他不知道自己在追寻什么,也不知道这些旅程会带给他什么;但他有一种感觉,他会学到关于生活的新东西,并找到解开那个谜团的线索—那个他原以为已解开,却发现愈发神秘的谜团。
即便最终一无所获,至少也能平息心中啃噬着他的不安。”
这几段文字表达了Philip对未来的憧憬和向往,探索未知的迫切,以及希望在行走中获得内心的平静。
当然小说中的Philip最终并没有去远方追梦,而是选择了家庭,选择了活在当下。
在选择当下还是选择未来之间,Philip的内心充满了矛盾。
在他误认为Sally怀孕的情况下,基于他对Sally与日俱增的爱,他发现:
Life! That was what he wanted. At last he would come to close quarters with life.生活!他所渴求的正是生活本身。他最终要和生活赤身相博了。
接着Philip对于当下和未来展开了深度的思考。
‘He had lived always in the future, and the present always, always had slipped through his fingers. His ideals?
He thought of his desire to make a design, intricate and beautiful, out of the myriad, meaningless facts of life: had he not seen also that the simplest pattern, that in which a man was born, worked, married, had children, and died, was likewise the most perfect?
It might be that to surrender to happiness was to accept defeat, but it was a defeat better than many victories.’

意思是说:
“他总是活在未来,而当下却总是从指缝间溜走。他的理想呢?
他曾如此渴望从生活中无数无意义的事实里,勾勒出复杂而美丽的人生图案,可他难道不曾发现—那最简朴的生活模式:生而劳作,婚育终老,恰是最完美的存在吗?
或许向幸福臣服意味着认输,但这种失败胜过许多胜利。“
在philip进行了如上思考后,他向Sally求婚了。
他从牺牲当下、追求未来的理想主义者,蜕变为发现平凡生活也是一种美的生活哲学家,这就是Philip在寻找自我、在追随梦想路上的成长。
在这本书中,主人公Philip在月亮与六便士之间选择了六便士,选择了享受当下。
可是在毛姆身上,故事却并没有到此结束。
当Philip在《人性的枷锁》中选择落地生根,拥抱“六便士”的温暖与安稳时,毛姆本人却始终追逐着那轮高悬的“明月”。
他从未停止远行,足迹遍布东南亚、南太平洋、中国和美洲大陆,异域风情和边缘人物成为他笔下不竭的灵感,他的一生都未曾真正安定。
菲利普在平凡中找到了哲学,而毛姆则选择在动荡与冒险中汲取创作的养分,真心应了在《人性的枷锁》这本书中Hayward写给Philip信中谈到的:
‘My feeling is that one should look upon life as an adventure, one should burn with the hard, gem-like flame, and one should take risks…’
意思是说:“我的感觉是,人应该把生命当作一场冒险,应当燃烧起如宝石般坚硬的火焰,应该去冒险…”
毛姆将他对人性的深刻洞察,源源不断地倾注于他笔下的角色上,他把笔下的人物安顿了,自己却永远在启程的路上。
