Moore House Design was hired to design the interiors of a newly constructed home for a retired couple in the coastal community of Jamestown, Rhode Island. Designed with comfort, character, and sophistication at the core, this waterfront residence defies the stereotype of a New England coastal home. After founding Moore House Design in New York several years ago, Blair Moore, a designer who grew up on a cattle ranch in Australia, chose to relocate to Warren, a historic port town outside Providence. This move was both to be closer to family and to seek a lifestyle change. Some core team members followed her to the new location to rebuild the company, allowing Moore to continue creating in a coastal environment.

The interior design was led by Moore House Design, with designer Blair Moore following the homeowners’ pursuit of individuality and refinement. Through the use of neutral tones and natural materials, Moore created a tranquil and peaceful retreat. She also paid special attention to the texture, patina, and material grain of objects, achieving a comfortable yet stylish spatial effect through layered material applications.
The architectural design of the residence was handled by Dimauro Architects in Jamestown, resulting in a home that offers panoramic views of Narragansett Bay. The interior design adheres to the homeowners’ pursuit of individuality and refinement, creating a serene and peaceful retreat through the use of neutral tones and natural materials. The landscape design, completed by Artemis Landscape Architects in Connecticut, integrates the building with the surrounding natural landscape of rocky cliffs and small coves by replanting native vegetation and planning multi-layered terraces. The collaborative efforts of the three design teams have resulted in a residence that is both meticulously designed and timeless, becoming a perfect retreat that mirrors its environment.

This 5,500-square-foot residence is described by designer Blair Moore as having a “modern Tudor style.” Its exterior architectural details draw from historical elements, while the interior spaces incorporate a wealth of vintage elements and antiques, enriching the texture. The home features three bedrooms, in addition to two separate guest rooms.
At the bottom of the entrance staircase, a bench designed by Taylor Kibby is paired with a modern-style side table. On the table sits a stone vase designed by Raquel Vidal and Pedro Paz, which Moore discovered on the 1stDibs platform. Additionally, the area is equipped with a wall sconce from Apparatus and a custom suspension pendant light from Obsolete, creating a harmonious overall (which can be translated as “arrangement” or “combination” in English for better flow: “The area is equipped with a wall sconce from Apparatus and a custom suspension pendant light from Obsolete, creating a harmonious arrangement.”).

In another part of the entrance, another work by Kibby—a ceramic wall hanging resembling chainmail or woven fabric—is suspended above an Oda & King bench. To echo the homeowners’ desire for a neutral and serene space, the designer used luxurious plaster on the main walls while still selecting several ceramic art pieces, including this one, as focal points.

The design journey begins in the living room area, where Moore pairs her self-designed low-back mohair velvet sofa with a 1940s “Tired Man” armchair by Flemming Lassen (upholstered in Pierre Frey plush fabric), purchased from 1stDibs. Additionally, a Charles Dudouyt tripod table and a series of ceramics by contemporary artisans like Philip Soucy are placed beside the sofa, collectively building a rich material hierarchy. To add a soft touch to the space, a cream-colored Nepalese carpet is laid, while the use of dark wooden furniture creates a visual contrast with the lighter elements.

On the right side of the living room fireplace, a Lande chair (designed by Møller & Stokke) with the most beautiful patina on its armrests is paired with an Egg Collective Wu side table. Behind the chair stands a Galerie Glustin Luminaires brass alabaster floor lamp from 1stDibs, alongside a pair of custom oak benches upholstered in Santa Cruz fabric.

In the kitchen space, a pendant light from Allied Maker hangs above the well-stocked island, adding a unique atmosphere. A vintage-style Mahal carpet is laid on the walkway on the right side of the kitchen, adding a touch of charm.

In the adjacent sunroom-style dining area, Moore designed a dark oak dining table and a long bench that wraps around two sides of the table. The remaining parts of the table are lined with cast aluminum Giac armchairs, complementing the dark metal frames of the bench. A sculptural pendant light from Ladies & Gentlemen Studio hangs above. The bench is intentionally low to avoid obstructing the view through the wrap-around windows.

On the second-floor landing wall, Moore installed Christina Watka’s ceramic artwork that spans the entire wall, instantly breathing life into the platform. Named “Murmurations,” this piece is composed of handmade ceramic discs arranged in a wavy pattern, with a glaze that mixes various pigments and shimmering metallic colors. As the light changes in the evening, sunlight hits this spot, causing the reflective fragments to sparkle. When dusk falls, it almost resembles a lamp, exuding a magical charm. Below it are placed a self-designed side table by Moore, a William Katavolos chair, and a mid-century Italian metal and leather industrial-style stool imported from the UK.

In terms of landscape design, waterfront rooms feature large glass curtain walls. Starting from the ground-floor entertainment space, the various spaces flow seamlessly and all lead directly to the terraces, achieving the effect of skillfully bringing the outdoor landscape indoors and allowing the indoor and outdoor spaces to blend naturally.

Directly above is the master bedroom suite, with the top floor featuring separate retreat areas for the couple. Moore designed them as a “meditation space” for the wife and a home office for the husband. The calming earth tones extend into the master bedroom, where the lower half of the wall behind the custom upholstered bed features dark-stained, crack-cut oak wainscoting, contrasting with the cream-colored plaster wall above. The bedside tables, designed by Moore, are made of oak with travertine tops and are placed under Allied Maker pendant lights. Fluffy lounge chairs by Mario Bellini from the 1970s flank the fireplace on either side. A distressed Art Deco-style wall mirror and a wool-upholstered stool are also sourced from 1stDibs. A snow-white alpaca carpet adds further softness.

This multifunctional meditation space, specially designed for the wife, integrates yoga, sound therapy, and crystal collection functions. The designer has positioned its style as “both spiritual and individual.” In the center of the space, a circular coffee table sourced from the Roundtop flea market in Texas is surrounded by four Disc Interiors swivel chairs upholstered in chocolate-colored Santa Cruz fabric, with an alpaca carpet laid beneath. In the left rear corner, a rosewood Nordic desk from 1stDibs (where the wife occasionally makes jewelry) is paired with a Swedish Baroque drawer cabinet. In the right rear corner, a rough ceramic vase by Raquel Vidal and Pedro Paz sits on a 19th-century wine-tasting table. On the middle wall hangs a female-themed oil painting specially created by Paul Meyer, with the artist directly embedding crystal fragments provided by the client into the artwork.

In an iron-framed glass cabinet sourced from a flea market, her extensive crystal collection is displayed. Moore has stated that she enjoys the contrast between the industrial feel of the container and the preciousness of the collection.
The top-floor space has been designed as an office for the male homeowner, featuring a customizable height-adjustable desk inspired by the classic lattice-design desk of Pierre Jeanneret. The open bookshelves incorporate subtle design details reminiscent of Jean Prouvé’s style and display the homeowner’s diverse collection of ceramic art pieces. The reading area is equipped with Arne Jacobsen’s iconic Egg Chair and a matching soft leather ottoman from the same collection, creating a cozy retreat where one can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean.
