The birth of Vipp Hotel stems from Kasper Egelund’s dream of escaping Manhattan in 2012, a dream that she has since materialized into a holistic vacation experience incorporating all the defining characteristics of Vipp products. Since the introduction of the Vipp Hotel concept, the company’s mailbox has been inundated with correspondence from customers and design enthusiasts alike, all expressing their keen interest in renting the accommodation for weekends. This unanticipated demand for just a single overnight stay at Vipp Hotel inspired the company to conduct a pilot test in 2016 by offering ten weekend stays. The overwhelmingly positive response to this test solidified their vision of transforming Vipp Hotel into a fully-fledged hospitality establishment.

The Copenhagen Cabin offers a more intriguing interplay between architecture and nature when compared to the Vipp Hut in Sweden. The Vipp Hut, a steel pod, stands out prominently from the woods overlooking the mythical Lake Immeln in southern Sweden, while the attic is situated beneath the roof of a 1910 factory in the industrial area of Islands Brygge. Danish architect David Thulstrup personally oversaw every aspect of the attic, furnishing it with art pieces, indoor greenery, and an extensive collection of design classics amidst its numerous wooden beams. Despite sharing similarities in product interiors, the two spaces present vastly different architectural and natural scenes.
Vipp could have designed a classic exhibition hall within the architectural structure of the available loft space, but they did not want to stop there. Copenhagen, where Vipp is located, is a must-visit destination for gourmets, architecture enthusiasts, and design fanatics. Vipp invites them to spend a wonderful evening in a curated attic that combines art and design within a transformed 1910 printing factory.
For a company, it is crucial to possess a space that transcends the conventional bounds of a mere store or showroom. The retail landscape is evolving at an astonishing pace, and for brands to outshine online shopping and captivate customers offline, they must offer additional and comprehensive experiences. This includes facilitating a “try-before-you-buy” approach within an environment that feels “just around the corner,” fostering a sense of familiarity. The Vipp Hotel promises to deliver an extraordinary experience and innovative ways to interact with products in unconventional settings.
The attic in Copenhagen, originally the attic of a printing factory from the early 20th century, has been rented by Vipp to a clothing brand as a studio space in recent years. When Vipp’s office space expanded beyond the first two floors of the building, the brand expressed its desire to create something extraordinary in this unusual attic. Many attics from that era were similar, not unique to Copenhagen, but also found in Oslo, Stockholm, and even Paris, sharing the same architectural style. David Thulstrup discovered that if one could label light, the Scandinavian characteristic would be the natural light pouring in from the enormous tall windows. To enhance the quality of light, David Thulstrup chose to sandblast the originally white painted beams in the attic to their natural state.

Vipp’s creations have always been rooted in metalwork, and they believe that incorporating this material into art pieces is meaningful – for instance, the large tin box in the dining area crafted by Jenny Nordberg from Etage Projects; the sculpture beside the chimney by A Kassen from Galleri Nicolai Werner; and the curved metal chair in the upstairs bedroom designed by Spanish designer Guillermo Santoma from Etage Projects. These three distinct artworks, all representing preliminary stages of metalworking – casting and bending – showcase the fluidity and organic shapes of metal prior to its transformation into functional items akin to Vipp’s products.
David Thulstrup’s design of the Vipp Cabin aimed to create a space that guests would be reluctant to leave, a sanctuary-like space that embraces you upon entering. As guests step into the attic, they are first greeted by a very low-lying grey entrance, with a light grey bathroom and a bright bedroom adorned with white linens to their left. To their right lies an exceptionally tall space, where the unique interplay of light and shadow naturally draws guests’ attention upwards towards the ceiling, revealing the astonishing height of the room.
In the realm of furniture, David Thulstrup’s profound understanding of interior design is evident. He incorporates iconic pieces into the design, yet he prioritizes achieving a perfect balance among textures, materials, colors, and shapes over highlighting expensive or iconic furniture. Rather than selecting furniture solely based on its iconic status or perceived necessity, David believes in opting for products that align seamlessly with the concept being created. It’s about how every single object contributes to a harmonious and balanced ensemble. According to David Thulstrup, when this balance is achieved, individuals can foster a sense of belonging within the space, fostering an enduring desire to linger and return.
Certainly, the design concept revolves primarily around the Vipp product universe, where David Thulstrup aims to complement and contrast the bold style of the black and white steel products with a warm Scandinavian ambiance. This is achieved through the use of light gray tones, Dinesen’s Douglas oak flooring, and the incorporation of various soft and warm materials such as fur, velvet, and wool. Moreover, the integration of greenery within the space, perfectly complemented by the towering windows, adds a vibrant touch to the design.
