非土生土长的阿拉伯故事集

传说在古阿拉伯的海岛上，有一个萨桑王国，国王山鲁亚尔生性残暴嫉妒，因王后行为不端，将其杀死，此后每日娶一少女，翌日晨即杀掉，以示报复。宰相的女儿山鲁佐德为拯救无辜的女子，自愿嫁给国王，用讲述故事方法吸引国王，每夜讲到最精彩处，天刚好亮了，使国王爱不忍杀，允她下一夜继续讲。她的故事一直讲了一千零一夜，国王终于被感动了,于是有了这本故事集。

但真实情况是，虽然《一千零一夜》是用阿拉伯语写成的，但并不是土生土长、原汁原味的阿拉伯文学著作。书中各类奇闻异事大都来自波斯、印度、罗马、巴比伦甚至中国。故事集经过印度、波斯、伊拉克、埃及等地长达数百年的传播，逐步编定，形成各种手抄本。虽然《一千零一夜》是用阿拉伯语写成的，但却是融合多种文化的阿拉伯文学著作。

【传说】Sinbad and Aladdin are two of the 1,001 tales linked by Scheherazade’s frame story. She married King Shahryar to break his cycle of revenge. Betrayed by his first wife, the Sultan is executing each of his vergin brides the morning after their wedding night.

辛巴和阿拉丁只是莎赫札德讲述的《一千零一夜》故事中的两个角色。她嫁给舍赫亚尔国王，以消除他周而复始的复仇。由于被第一任妻子背叛，舍赫亚尔国王开始每夜取一名妻子，天亮就将之处死。

Scheherazade herself is faced with a tremendous problem-genocide. The Sultan is killing all the women in the kingdom, and alone she stands up and fights it. She’s telling stories to save her life. Each ends on a cliff-hanger, so the king lets he live to hear the next instalment.

A dusty Syria manuscript became an overnight literacy sensation. It was tranlated by Antoine Galland, a brilliant linguist and a great favourite of Louis XIV. Antoine Galland was a prodigy from a poor background who spoke Persian, Arabic, Turkish and Hebrew. He wen to look for manicripts for Christian theology, and he came back deeply admiring of the Middls East. He translated the koran. He tranlsted the Koran. He became the first great French Arabist.

The victorians read the Arabian Night avidly, but its sexual content but seduced and scandalized them. Arabist Edward Lane drastically censored his translation for the victorian family.

Lane was the son of a clergyman. He was a scholar.He spent time in egypt, and he knew what he was doing, but apparently didn’t read all that much in English apart from the Bible. So when it comes to translating the night, if you look at Lane’s version, now it’s it’s very archaic. He’s a bit pruient. So he cuts them. He omits anything of an explicitly sexual nature or of anything that would be in any way possibly indecent or indecorous.

In the Middle East, it is still controversial. You are not been rewarded for being good. You are being rewarded for being lucky and that’s against all religious thinking and teaching. So the book is cosidered an immoral book.
