在中国神话中，人死后会前往阴间入口的奈何桥，过了奈何桥，亡魂会在望乡台边遇见一位名叫孟婆的神祇。她会给每个经过的亡魂递上一碗孟婆汤。喝下这碗汤，亡魂就会忘记所有的前世记忆，包括一切爱恨情仇，烦恼牵挂。

在希腊神话里，也有类似的说法。
