For the first time, Sidewalk Labs showcased plans to transform Toronto’s waterfront area into a hyper-connected sustainable community of the future.

About a year ago, Sidewalk Labs selected 800 acres of land along Lake Ontario to partner with local redevelopment agency Waterfront Toronto to build a brand new community. The plan will invest $50 million in smart city solutions – “combining people-centered urban design with cutting-edge technology” – to create a place where anyone can live, work or visit.

This week, after submitting it to local residents to share it with containment, the first idea of what the lab walkway development gave might look like.

A key component of this vision is more timber buildings, produced for Sidewalk Labs by Vancouver-based industry leader Michael Green Architecture. Mass timber construction is a more sustainable construction process that is healthier for construction workers and future occupants. Plus, it’s easy to source and replenish thanks to nearby Canadian forests.

Sidewalk Labs says timber structures are also cheaper to build than those using typical construction methods and can be easily changed or adjusted over time. By 2021, the Canadian Building Code will allow timber buildings up to 12 stories.

The cold, rainy climate tends to shut down outdoor activities, but planners of Toronto’s sidewalks want to keep the city active throughout the season with a series of engineering shades and shelters. The result will be climate-controlled public spaces designed to keep out rain and snow, but also from wind and heat. According to the Sidewalk Lab, this will double the “available outdoor time.”

The signature action here is “stoa” – a Greek word used to cover walkways – accordion-like canopies, and heated streets to keep the city more of a public space.

While Sidewalk Toronto is a waterfront property, the envelope itself is shaped to allow only part of the land to enter the water. The proposal shows a plan to extend the waterfront into the development area, connecting communities on both sides through a series of bridges, recreational areas and public beaches.

Another way to keep your neighbourhood connected to the waterfront is to watch the line of sight: streets heading towards Lake Ontario will have unobstructed views of the water.

Sidewalk Labs is also reinventing sidewalks. Experimental architecture firm Carlos Ratti Associati has created a “Dynamic Street” prototype of an interactive modular paver for the development. The kit includes a variety of surface and micro recessed LED lights that can represent the use of walking with bicycle and basketball courts – and create “lanes”.

The sidewalk lab not only tracks how the street is used, but also adjusts the design of the right-of-way at any time, and the pavers can be changed seasonally or even as technology evolves.

Another notable innovation is Sidewalk Toronto’s street hierarchy, which creates an increasingly large street system that prioritizes pattern movement. Thus, the lanes (alleys) are wide enough to allow vehicles to make deliveries in the morning or evening, but during the day they become squares suitable for people.

While these are the latest physical updates, the city will also be powered by other Sidewalk Labs technology products that will continue to evolve. Over the past few years, the Sidewalk lab has deployed digital kiosks that provide free Wi-Fi, real-time information on traffic: historical photos of what (buildings or possible images). Recently, Google launched the data mobility startup Coordinates: Multimodal Travel Planner Router app.
