The Old Building Hidden in the Dantu Road Parking Lot
Among old-house enthusiasts and photography circles, some people are always reluctant to reveal which old buildings they have photographed, for fear that others will follow suit. In fact, this circle is both very small and very large. When you think the scope is limited, there are actually many others in the circle that you don’t know about, who are also paying attention to these dilapidated structures hidden in ruins. Therefore, those old buildings tucked away in corners still surface through various channels.
It was only after Ji Li, a post-90s enthusiast with the same hobby, posted a video about this building on Dantu Road that I remembered I had also documented it in my photo library. At the time, I couldn’t find the main entrance and didn’t dare to enter the occupied spaces, so my photos were incomplete.
Upon learning that this building miraculously still stands amid the ruins, I recently conducted an aerial shoot. As all other buildings in the alley had been demolished, it finally revealed its original appearance, especially the stunning gable on its east side (the west gable may only become visible after the adjacent buildings are torn down).
Entering through the main door, one can see a full 20 electric meters, indicating that over 20 households once lived in this single building. It’s easy to imagine how cramped the residents’ living conditions were at the time.
The continuity of the gables suggests there is another section behind, though its structure is poorer. Nevertheless, its capacity remains astonishing.
Although the building’s structure isn’t particularly sophisticated, what’s intriguing is its isolated existence—there are no similar buildings nearby, nor any other red-brick alley structures of the same type. Thus, the origin of this building has become a direction worth exploring in the future.
Hopefully, some expert can shed light on this mystery.
