Festival and Celebrations:Why Do We Celebrate Festivals?

云南 张致行

Good afternoon, distinguished judges and dear teachers, it’s my great honor to be here to share my lesson with you. The lesson is taken from Book 3 Unit 1 Festival and Celebrations, Reading and Thinking part, Why Do We Celebrate Festivals? Now, I’d like to share my lesson in the six following aspect.

My lesson is based on the new senior high school curriculum standard, which indicates that the aim of English teaching is to cultivate students’ core competences, so to achieve this objective, the Activity-based approach is applied to English learning, and a series of integrated, relevant and practical theme-based activities are designed.

In addition, according to the integration of teaching evaluation, the learning objectives, learning process and the learning evaluation are consistent, so under the guidance of teaching principle, I analyze my teaching materials.

The theme of this unit is man and the society–festival and celebrations, and the whole unit can be summarized into one big idea and three small ones, and also the teaching arrangement are also rescheduled

The big idea is to help students learn about the festivals in different cultures, and students can explore the significance of the festivals. On this basis, student can enhance cultural confidence, so the ability to spread excellent Chinese traditional culture is also improved.

My lesson, as the 2nd period, serves as a bridge to connect the form part and the latter part, and the content of this text is to discover the reasons for festivals and celebrations, which focuses on the spirits, development and the significance of festivals. And the purpose of the text is not only to improve students reading ability, but also to guide them to gain a deep understanding of the significance of festivals. Thus, they can form correct value and attitude toward different cultural festivals. The text is an exposition consisting of five paragraphs. It can be divided into three parts. Part one includes para one as an introduction, part two includes para two to para four as a body, and part three includes five and part six as a conclusion, which indicates the significance of festivals.

I’d like to analyze my students from their strengths and weaknesses. The students in the second term of grade one have acquired basic vocabulary and background information about festivals. Some of them have acquired the basic reading strategy, such as skimming and scanning. And they can think independently, and are willing to share their ideas with others.

However, they still need help in expressing their opinions in English. Moreover, they may find it hard to think deeply to figure out the profound connotations, and they have the ability to make an overall analysis of the text.

Based on the analysis of teaching material and students, next is the learning objectives.

By the end of the class, students will be able to: 1. figure out the reasons for festival celebrations; 2.identify the topic sentences of paragraphs by using the strategy skimming3. clarify the structure of the passage and recognize the writing type and techniques; 4. express opinions on the changes of festivals; 5. understand the significance and spiritual connotation of festivals. So the objective one, three, four is based on the language ability aspect and objective two is based on the learning ability, and the fifth one is to cultivate students’ thinking capacity and cultural awareness, so the learning objectives are also my teaching key points and teaching difficult points.

So my solution is guiding to deeply analyze the text and provide them with sufficient scaffolding. To achieve these learning objectivesI applied the independent learning method and the cooperative learning method. Well, I applied the activity-based teaching and the situational teaching methods, also a worksheet is provided as my teaching aid.

Next lets come to the most important part, my teaching procedure. So based on the 5E principle, that is engagement, exploration, explanation, evaluation and elaboration, a series of gradual and interrelated activity are designed to achieve a comprehensive understanding.

Now, let’s come to the 1st stage: engagement. Students got to think about and answer the question: What festivals do we celebrate? And the next one, why do we celebrate these festivals?

This activity aims to engage students in the topic and activate the existing knowledge, and get ready for the class

Next, let’s move on to the stage two:exploration. In this step, I got students to read some questions by focusing different words in a title, and the three questions will be verified by reading the text.

This activity aim to enhance students’ prediction skills and also simulate the reading expectations.

Then students read the passage quickly to verify the question one. But before reading, I introduced thereading strategy one for them. The students read paragraph one and figured out the main reason one for celebrating the festivals. That is, different festivals have common spirits.

Then students can figure out the differences and common spirit by filling a chart.Through this step, the objective one is achieved.

Then students read para5 to identify another important reasons for celebrating festivals, that is, festival are important in our society. Then students can figure out the significance of festivals by filling in the blanks. Through this step, the objective 1 and 5 are achieved, and their learning can be easily evaluated.

Next students moved to para2 to find out the reason and different celebration of harvest festival. After that, students think and infer people’s feelings of celebrating harvest festival, that ispeople are grateful and joyful. Then, students can figure out the function of this paragraph which is to support para1.

By reading para3, students can found out another reason for celebration, that is, we celebrate festivals because the customs are important. The students can figure out why and what customs have changed by filling in a blank.

They can also identify the writing techniques by pay attention to these expressions. So through this step, objective 1 and 3 are achieved, and their learning performance can be easily evaluated.

Finally, students read para4 and decide whether the statements are true or false. Then I invited them to notice the “loved one”and ”public awareness” and they are clear about the function of this paragraph, also to support papa1.

Now let’s move on to question two: Who do we refers to ? After answering the questions, here is further question for my students: Why is the word we used in a title instead of “people”?
