别人的工作总是更好？别人的伴侣总是更贴心？别急，这句英语谚语说的就是你！
最近小王总是抱怨：’我真羡慕小李的工作，工资高又轻松，哪像我天天加班！’结果上周小李辞职了，原因竟然是——他羡慕小王的工作更有挑战性！
这不禁让人想起英语中那句经典的谚语：’The grass is always greener on the other side’。
今天，我们就用一篇文章揭开这个表达的神秘面纱，顺便学习一系列与’grass’和’green’相关的有趣表达！
01.‘the grass is greener’的真面目
源自古老智慧的现代启示：这个谚语最早可以追溯到古罗马诗人奥维德的作品，他在《爱的艺术》中写道：’别人的田地总是更肥沃。’（The harvest is always more fruitful in another man’s fields.）
后来这个思想演变成了我们今天熟知的版本，字面意思是’篱笆另一边的草总是更绿‘，引申为’这山望着那山高’或者’邻家的草分外青‘。
例子：Why are you always wanting to change jobs? The grass is always greener on the other side, you know.
例子：She thought life would be better in New York, but soon discovered the grass isn’t always greener.
她原以为纽约的生活会更好，但很快发现别人的不一定更好。
02.更多与’grass’和’green’相关的趣味表达
例子：With her husband on a business trip, she became a grass widow for two weeks.
例子：He grassed on his accomplices to get a lighter sentence.
例子：The candidate focused on issues important to the grass roots.
4. let the grass grow under one’s feet
例子：She’s not one to let the grass grow under her feet – always starting new projects.
例子：Be careful of him – he’s a real snake in the grass.
例子：She turned green with envy when she saw her friend’s new car.
例子：The city has a green belt to prevent urban sprawl.
例子：My mother has a green thumb – everything she plants grows beautifully.
例子：The boss gave us the green light to start the new project.
正如一位英国作家所说：’There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.’ ”生活中只有两种悲剧：一种是得不到想要的，另一种是得到了。“这句话完美地诠释了’the grass is greener’的心态——我们总是渴望得不到的，却在得到后失望。
